Lian bounced down the fish food isle where Roy was looking for the fish flakes they feed their Angel fish. A look of concentration on his face as he muttered about the store always moving the food on him every time he came.
Lian giggled and threw her arms around Roy's waist as she looked up, her eyes sparkling.
“Uh-oh,” Roy said as he gave Lian an one armed hug as he smiled in triumph as he found the fish food he was looking for. “You've got a sparkle in your eye. Means your up to something.”
Lian squeezed her father around his waist. “I've found a present for Uncle Tim!” she said in barely contained excitement.
Roy's eyes got a little wide, “A present?!” he immediately started going down the list of birthdays, anniversaries, and overall special days that denoted gift giving and/or a night out and thankfully couldn't think of anything that he was forgetting. “Honey, I don't think there's any reason I need to get a present for Tim.”
Lian rolled her eyes as she began tugging her father after her. “There doesn't always need to be a reason to get someone a present. Sometimes you just give them one to make them happy,” she said in a tone that clearly said this was something Roy should know already.
Roy chuckles as his daughter pulls him along. Since turning thirteen, Lian had decided that boys weren't plague carriers, and was full of helpful advice on how Roy could be a better boyfriend to Tim.
They stopped at the end of the isle and peered around the end to see Tim standing in front of some cages that held various cat that were up for adoption. One in particular had seemed to capture Tim's attention. A small black kitten pawed at the finger that Tim had slipped through the bars. A relaxed, gentle smile was on Tim's face as he held a whispered conversation with the kitten.
Lian was practically jumping up and down in glee. “See Daddy? See how happy he looks? He really wants her.”
Roy's look was more skeptical. “Just because he's play with the kitten doesn't mean he wants it.”
Lian made a noise that thirteen year old girls shouldn't make as she rolled her eyes at her father. “Daddy, he wants her. You know he does.”
Roy crossed his arms. “It'll eat the fish.”
“He wants her and he'll never buy her for himself,” Lian said softly, a slight tremor in her voice.
Roy at least was smart enough to know when he was beat. He ran a hand through his daughter's hair and gave her a small smile. She gave a small whoop and hugged Roy one more time. “I'm going to look for some toys for her.” she said as she scampered down the isle.
Roy walked down to Tim and wrapped his arms around his lover. “Looks like you found a friend,” he whispered softly.
Tim gave his familiar half smile as he leaned against Roy. “She's got some spunk to her.”
The kitten in question was sleek and black, with bright golden eyes. She had a tiny paw on Tim's finger and she seemed to be inspecting his finger nail. She looked up when Roy came up and gave him a quick sniff and a bored look, then turned back to inspecting Tim finger. “I don't think she's impressed with me,” Roy said softly which made Tim laugh.
“She just doesn't know you.”
Roy tighten his hold on Tim a bit, “So . . . Lian is off looking for cat toys for her,”
Tim was shaking his head even before the words were out of Roy's mouth. “She'll harass the fish,”
“It'll just keep them on their toes,” Roy argued softly, “Besides, you'll just make some excuse to come down to see her every day till someone does adopt her and then you'll keep tabs on whoever adopted her to make sure she's okay. I know you stalker Boy Wonder,” Roy teased lightly. “What did you name her?”
“I didn't . . “
“You did. I know you did,” Roy said overriding him.
“ . . .”
“Come on, what is it?”
“Cleo.”
“Cleo,” Roy said as he rolled the name around a bit, “A dainty little name for a dainty little lady.” he said as he pulled Tim toward the counter to ask about the adoption papers. The look on Tim's face made Roy feel as if he a grown five feet taller. He made a note to make sure to thank his daughter for all her hard work to make sure he never missed an chance to make Tim smile like that.
