A/N: Decided I wanted to post this story over here, so I'll be posting parts 1-6 and the two side stories, plus a masterlist. Sorry for the up coming spamage. (though I won't do it all at once so you won't be slammed with it)
Red Arrow stood on the observation platform to the training room, watching the two combatants size each other up. Hawkgirl and Robin slowly circled each other, then in a flurry of fists, elbows, knees, and feet, two bodies unfolded into a series of jabs, dodges, strikes, feints, leaps, attacks and counters - morphing into a deadly ballet that made the heart pound.
A whisper of wind was all that announced the arrival of the Flash behind Red Arrow, "Hey Roy whats up?"
Roy glanced over his shoulder with a smirk on his face. "Birdwatching," he said with a nod to the training room below.
Wally peered over Roy's shoulder, sighed, and shook his head, "That bird has a set of claws,"
"All the true pretty birds do Wally," Roy said, his smirk sliding into a smile.
"That 'pretty bird' has a temper."
"A temper, wits, cunning, daring, courage, beauty, . . ." Roy counted off each trait as Wally made gagging noises
"You're forgetting one, the ability to throw you around like a ragdoll."
"I was never attracted to wallflowers," Roy mused.
"Some people might not like the idea of you pursuing that bird," Wally said with a note of seriousness to his voice.
"I'm not afraid of Batman."
Wally stilled all over as he looked at his long time friend. He walked to Roy's side and looked down at the training room. "You're after Robin? What happened to Hawkgirl ?"
"She doesn't have enough issues," Roy joked.
"Are you insane?" Wally asked incredulously. "He's just a kid."
"He'll be nineteen next week," Roy said defensively.
"Yeah, that makes everything better," Wally muttered.
"Besides," Roy said, ignoring Wally's mutterings. "You know none of the Bats were ever kids." Roy fell silent as he followed Robin with his eyes. "Sometimes I forget how young he is. I mean you look in his eyes and you can tell that they've seen so much - good and bad. You just want to make sure he gets to see more good." By this point Roy's voice had dropped to a whisper, "He's so sincere - about everything. He's sincerely going to kick your ass or sincerely kiss you breathless."
Wally just shook his head at his lovelorn friend, "Is he even interested?"
"Yeah," Roy said with a sigh, with half closed eyes, Roy remembers deep blue eyes, a heartfelt sigh, a soft smile, and even softer lips. "He's interested."
"Man, you're never going to be allowed back in Gotham," Wally said with a shake of his head.
"Yeah? Well Lian always did get a warmer reception than I ever did," Roy said with a smirk.
"Can't blame Batman for knowing who the prettier Harper is," Wally laughed.
"Hey! That's my little girl you're talking about."
"Yeah," Wally said with a smile and a nod. "You think Batman will say the same thing about Robin?"
" . . . Maybe."
Both turned back to the training below as Robin and Hawkgirl finished with their sparring. The doors to the training room opened and Nightwing walked in. The three held an unheard conversation, with it ending with Hawkgirl throwing her head back in laughter and Robin shaking his head in mock dismay at Nightwing.
"You know Roy, Batman isn't going to be your biggest problem," Wally said as Nightwing threw a arm around Robin's shoulders and lead him out. "He is."
It was common knowledge that as soon as Robin was made a reserve member of the JLA, Nightwing was seldom not at Robin's side. It was as if Nightwing had thrown an invisible barrier around Robin, and now stood between him and anything that came his way. Including people, Roy wasn't the first to notice that Batman's quiet sidekick had turned into a handsome and remarkable young man. Nightwing had made sure that all would be suitors knew Robin was off limits, no one was good enough for his little brother.
But Roy could tell, that as devoted as Robin was to his older brother, he was beginning to get restless in his makeshift cage.
"Thats okay, I'm not afraid of Nightwing either."
